It's similar to a palette knife in oil painting, but this one is made of sponge. Give it some charcoal / graphite powder and smear it on the paper, it creates a very smooth shading. Mine is from Maries, you can find a similar product on Amazon called Sofft Tools Pan Pastel Applicator.

Maybe a bit off topic, but I would really like a video on backgrounds. Like what works to enhance the drawing and what methods to use. Thank you in advance🙏

Hi Adrian, I usually tell people to not set a timer because why introduce unnecessary pressure, but if you think it would help you progress then it's okay. My drawing speed varies, some drawings might take me like 10 hours because the pose was easy, or I didn't put a complicated background, or the paper is small. My longest drawing was 24 hours, because it was a big A2 drawing, I spent too much time drawing the hair and the background was super dark. But generally I'd say 8-10 hours. I know my time not because I time it, but because I film the drawing process for RUclips. Also I usually don't draw in 1 sitting. I need like 3-4 days to complete 1 drawing. Also it's a good strategy to not draw the whole portrait when practicing. It's like rehearsal for a concert! Try to draw only the nose today. Then the mouth tomorrow on different papers. Take a small portion of the hair, and try just that next. And when you think you're ready, try the whole drawing that's the concert! You might think why bother drawing the same thing twice, but you might also be surprised how much you learn from your previous same drawing. ☺️

Amazon has it it's called Sofft Tools Pan Pastel Applicator, mine I bought from my local art store. They only sell applicator from Maries. It's the cheaper version of Sofft Tools.
